La Palma Takes a Major Step Forward in Its Recovery After the 2021 Tajogaite Volcano Eruption

  • Puerto Naos, La Palma’s prime tourist spot, reopens to the public
  • Enhanced air connectivity with new routes from Valencia and Prague this summer

La Palma, one of the Canary Islands, is bouncing back after the dramatic eruption of the Tajogaite volcano in September 2021. Thanks to ongoing recovery efforts, the island is steadily returning to normal. Two key roads now cross the once-impassable lava fields, reconnecting the island’s regions.

Reopening of Puerto Naos

Puerto Naos, a standout tourist destination, has reopened its beach, promenade, and services, with only a small section still restricted. This reopening marks a huge step for La Palma’s tourism sector, which had lost around 5,000 beds during the eruption as homes and resorts were buried under lava. As more accommodation facilities like hotels and apartments come back online, the island’s bed capacity is steadily increasing, with Puerto Naos being key to that recovery.

Boosted Air Connectivity

La Palma’s connectivity is also improving, making it easier than ever to visit. Summer 2024 will see the launch of new routes from Valencia and Prague, in addition to existing direct flights from mainland Spain, Germany (including Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Munich, and more in winter), and the UK (London year-round, and Manchester in winter). Tour operators and airlines are once again placing their confidence in La Palma as a top destination.

A New Attraction: The Tajogaite Volcano Tour

While the eruption left its mark, it has also created a new opportunity: visitors can now take guided tours to explore the Tajogaite volcano. These specialized excursions offer a two-hour journey through the stunning landscapes of Cumbre Vieja, where life is slowly returning to the protected natural space. The route provides breathtaking views of the volcanic cone and the newly formed lava fields—perfect for adventure seekers and nature lovers alike.

Rediscover La Isla Bonita

Known as “La Isla Bonita” for its breathtaking scenery, La Palma now boasts even more dramatic landscapes thanks to the volcano, including new coastal fajanas reclaimed from the sea. Whether you’re exploring lush forests, volcanic formations, or the island’s picturesque towns, La Palma offers great experiences for every visitor.

And, of course, it remains a safe destination, where the warm-hearted “palmeros” are eager to welcome travelers back to their beloved island.
