“We live in this amazing place and the beach is just over the road”
“The ethos here is work hard, play hard. We work during the week and then do the most amazing weekend trips. It’s a very productive and inspiring environment to work in” says Danielle Lee, a British accountant who is now living and working remotely in Gran Canaria.
So, why did Danielle, and three other women from the UK decide to pack their bags and work remotely from the sun in Gran Canaria? The answer is ‘Wifi Tribe’, a global organisation offering people the opportunity to work remotely and travel in their co-living and co-working spaces all over the world, including the Canary Islands, Mexico and South Africa.
According to Amanda Scott, Content Creator and Chapter Host, “Wifi Tribe is a community of nomadic professionals who, rather than living a static lifestyle, join up to work and travel together. We hold each other accountable to have a good work life balance. We all work very hard doing various things so, when it’s time to have fun and relax, we plan something together. Wifi Tribe is ultimately about the community experience and building relationships and networks you will carry forward for the future – our global family!”.
The Wifi Tribe are currently enjoying four weeks of co-working and co-living in Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, where they call two near identical villas their home. These villas are located in the centre of Las Palmas, a 5-minute walk from Alcaravaneras beach, the perfect setting for a morning run on the beach or, an evening swim with the sunset. The accommodation comes equipped with great wifi, open common areas for work, an outdoor area, and even a BBQ!
Kate Hafendem works in fintech and recently decided to swap the dull London weather for some winter sun in Gran Canaria, “I lived in London for five years and was getting a bit bored. I wanted to travel but didn’t want to give up my job. I came to Gran Canaria to practice my Spanish, enjoy the food and learn about the culture. The weather is quite nice here so, it’s brilliant to be able to go on walks and even lie by the beach”.
The Canary Islands is one of the UK’s favourite winter sun destinations, and, with a subtropical climate, the islands’ temperatures reach highs of 23C in November and December – perfect for lounging on the beach, exploring the islands and enjoying the delicious food.
Kate has travelled several times with the Wifi Tribe and has worked from some incredible locations all around the world, “I had a pinch myself moment when I was on the Costa Rica Chapter, working in a surf camp in the middle of the jungle and that was my office. Being there and then being able to walk to the beach in five minutes to see one of the best sunsets I’ve ever seen in my life, I sat there and thought ‘I can’t believe I’m doing this’”.
Ellie Swain is a freelance writer, and this is her second trip with the Wifi Tribe “I always had an interest in coming to the Canary Islands and it was perfect timing for me. I love that there are so many activities and the island is so compact and easy to get around. Wifi Tribe is the ideal environment for me, living with a group of people like-minded people who I can spend time with and explore with. There’s lots to do here, I want to see the sand dunes and explore the island. We’ve got everything you could want, with plenty of desk space, great internet and even plug sockets outside if you want to work in the sun”.
Just over a four-hour flight from the UK, the Canary Islands is the perfect destination for brits looking to escape for some well-deserved sun, with a huge amount of self-catering and private villa options available. The Canary Islands has one of the lowest infection rates of Covid-19 in Europe and the lowest in Spain.
