Portugal has achieved its best year ever for tourism from Ireland in 2024, welcoming 557,647 Irish visitors—an increase of 6.3% compared to 2023. The number of bednights also rose by 5%, reinforcing Portugal’s appeal as a top destination for Irish travelers.
Notably, less-known regions such as the Azores (+18.3%), Alentejo (+14.9%), and Porto & North (+12.7%) saw double-digit growth, demonstrating a broader distribution of visitors and supporting sustainable tourism. Growth was also particularly strong during the shoulder seasons, an encouraging sign for the long-term development of the sector.
While Madeira experienced an 18.3% drop in guests due to a 50% reduction in air capacity, the results still exceeded expectations. Looking ahead to 2025, tourism from Ireland to Portugal is set to continue its upward trajectory, with a significant increase in flight capacity. Madeira will see a rise from 1 to 4 weekly frequencies, while Faro will almost double its capacity from Cork Airport, making it even more accessible to Irish travelers.
With total revenue from Irish tourism reaching €1.19 billion in 2024 (+8.6% YoY), Portugal remains a key destination for Irish holidaymakers, offering a diverse and sustainable travel experience. |
